Comprehensive Cognitive Assessments for Children and Young People

At Psychology Oxford in Summertown, North Oxford, we offer in-depth cognitive assessments for children and teenagers aged 6–18. Our assessments are designed to identify areas of strength as well as areas needing additional support at school, helping families and educators make informed decisions about learning and development.

We provide full-scale IQ testing and detailed evaluations across a range of cognitive skills, including:

  • Verbal Comprehension

  • Visual-Spatial Ability

  • Fluid Reasoning

  • Working Memory

  • Processing Speed

  • Reading, Writing, and Numerical Abilities

Assessments can also include screening for dyslexia, ADHD, and autism spectrum conditions, helping families decide whether further specialist evaluation or support may be beneficial. Following assessments, we can facilitate referrals for additional services if appropriate.

Meet Dr Charlotte Evans – Paediatric Clinical Neuropsychologist

We are delighted to welcome Dr Charlotte Evans, a Chartered Clinical Neuropsychologist and Psychologist, to our Oxford practice. Charlotte brings extensive NHS and independent practice experience, specialising in paediatric neuropsychology. She works with children, young people, and their families, providing cognitive assessments, dyslexia screening, and online support.

Charlotte’s training combines evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and third-wave approaches, with a focus on individual needs and personal experiences. Her assessments help families understand their child’s learning profile, cognitive strengths, and areas that may need additional support at school.

What does a cognitive assessment involve?

You can expect a full cognitive assessment appointment to last approximately 2.5 hours. During this time, your child or young person will complete a number of assessments. You may also be asked to complete some questionnaires as well. We allow plenty of time for breaks. We ensure the testing environment is calm and friendly.

If your child or young person requires glasses for reading, please ensure they have these with them. Also, please let us know if your child has any additional difficulties which may affect testing (such as colour blindness or pre-identified learning needs).

We will also conduct an interview with the parent/s or guardian, to get a better sense of the child or young person's developmental history. If it is not appropriate to do so with the child or young person present, this can also be conducted separately over the phone.

We use the latest, most reliable, and widely accepted forms of assessment. These include the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children®-Fifth Edition (WISC®-V) and the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test®-Third Edition (WIAT®-III) . We may also select further assessments depending on the needs of the family.

We produce a detailed report, including recommendations for schools and families, to best promote the strengths (and develop areas of focus) of the child or young person.

Fees and pricing

The cost for a full cognitive assessment (including detailed report and a session to feedback the results) is £1000. If you would like us to feed back in further detail to the school, this is priced at our standard rate of £130 per 50 minute session.
